Police officer convicted of rape and indecent assault

This article is about the ex police officer Stephen Mitchell, of Northumbria police. He was sent to court because he has many accusations of raping women. This police officer had also served the army, and in those years he was charged with sexual assaults. Now they are investigating if the police department of Northumbria knew about the past of this Mitchell before they hired him. In a trial of 5 weeks, this man of 42 years old has been charged of 2 rapes, 3 sexual assaults and 3 misconducts in a public office. It is also told that his victims were heroin addicts, shoplifters and one disabled teenager. He used to lie that he would help them to get out of the Pilgrim Street police station, but in return they had to give him sexual favours. He also told a mother that if she did not do what he asked she will not get her children back from local authority care.  During the investigation some new discoveries came out. He had been punished in 2007 to having sex with women that he had met during his duties. He also could not work for 3 days because he was using the police computers to get information for personal issues. The police station finally fired him when the women charged him with serious sexual offences. The sentence is not yet revealed, but they have put this ex police man in an indeterminate sentence to protect the public. The police officers that worked with him said that Mitchell was a manipulative person, because he lied in his application form about the things that he had done in the army, because otherwise they would have never accepted him to work in Northumbria police.

A van transporting PC Stephen Mitchell leaves court in Newcastle.
Reaction: I cannot understand why this man was accepted in this police department without doing a better research on his past. I think this should be the most appropriate thing to do. This is not just a job, people trust in police officers so they should do more research before hiring police officers, otherwise this can keep happening. This man has abuse his position and has damaged the lives of many women.

1 opmerking:

  1. It is scandalous that a police officier behaves like this. Just like Celia said, it is a shame that someone who is supposed to protect the people does such a thing. Because of people like him citizens lose their confidence and trust in the police. Moreover, it is very strange that there was no investigation done into his past before he was hired, maybe all of this could have been avoided.
