Girl arrested for allegedly burning Qur'an

Sultan Baybar's Qur'an, at the British Library
A teenager from Birmingham has burned an English-language version of the Qur'an. The consequences: the girl has been arrested because this action might incite religious hatred. This 15-year-old girl was filmed burning the Qur'an in front of other students and after this she posted it on Facebook. Many teenagers saw this video and a 14-year-old boy wrote some threats on this video, that is why he has also been arrested. After arresting them they removed the video of this website. This is not the first time that some people burn the Qur'an book. A couple of months before a group of people did the same thing. They filmed themselves burning this book behind a pub in Tyneside. They were also arrested. Both of these cases have been incited by a Florida pastor who came with this idea after 9/11. He wanted to burn 200 books of the Qur'an, but after he was told that the US army in Afghanistan would be in danger if he did this, he retracted. After the incident of the teenager, the group who published the English version of the Qur'an went to the school to talk with students about this. According to the chief executive officer of the Muslim public affairs committee what the teenager did was the most disrespectful thing for Muslims, because this book is the most important thing for them. The teenagers have been released but they will interrogate them in the future.

Reaction: This is not the first time I read that some people burn the Qur'an book. I agree with the chief executive when she says that this is the most disrespectful action someone can do to the Muslim religion. We are in the 21 century and I do not think these sorts of actions can keep happening. There have to be limits, and I think if people continue doing these sorts of things they have to be punished more severely, otherwise they will never learn that they have to respect the religion of other people. I think everyone is free to choose their religion and to practice it without judgments.

  1. People should respect religion but what if they burned the bible or another book? I do not think they will be arrested. I think it is their religion to act this way and if they think that arresting people is the best solution they should do so but maybe it goes a little bit too far.

  2. I agree with Celia, every action has a reaction. People also have to realize that there is a sequence in which events occur, it is not like people will start to threat her for nothing, or hate for nothing. You can't declare war and simultaneously live in peace. Because it is clear she wanted to invoke the Muslims, and I am glad that there is some righteousness left in people to arrest her. Don't forget that there is an anti-Semitism law. If you agree with that than you have to agree with this. Otherwise you have a double standard, which is one of the qualities of a racist.
And of course if someone had burned the bible than the same would have happened, the only difference would be that no one will argue that.
